To Hell and Back

Last night, Jennifer Soloway and I performed Jake Heggie’s To Hell and Back with Boston Opera Collaborative. It was my first time both producing and performing in a large scale project and I learned so much from the experience as an artist and a project manager. The talk-back following the event included an important discussion about what resources are available through UUUM’s domestic violence safehouse. Heggie’s opera served as a conduit through which people could openly talk about this difficult material in an informative setting. Audience members left the event with a resource packet, which included resource information about how to identify and combat domestic violence. This project was extremely rewarding and 20% of all proceeds were donated to UUUM’s domestic violence safehouse.

I hope to produce more projects that are focused around important social justice topics. The fight for equality for all people is an ongoing battle. I feel grateful to have played a small role in spreading awareness about one aspect of social injustice that people face every day.
